Interesting facts you probably didn’t know about sleep

This blog post is brought to you by Sleep Studio, your local mattress and bedding specialists, available exclusively at ComfortStyle.

Sleep is a weird and wonderful phenomenon that researchers are continually trying to understand, most of what we know about sleep today has only been discovered in the last 25 years. We’ve collected a handful of weird and wonderful facts about sleep for you to catch up on in between naps.

A Giraffe only needs 1.9 Hours of sleep a day! At the other end of scale, the brown bat needs 19.9 hours of sleep a day.

On average, humans spend 1/3 of their life asleep…that’s a long time to spend on a mattress! This is why it’s so important to carefully choose your bed and mattress.

Humans are the only ones to willingly delay sleep, and people aged between 18-24 are the most sleep deprived among us. Experts claim that 24/7 access to the internet is one of the key things keeping people up at night.

Scientists still haven’t been able to determine if animals dream in a similar way to humans. In fact, they’re still not even 100% why it is that humans dream.
Some research suggests we dream to fix experiences in long-term memory whilst some researchers believe we sleep as a way to eliminate overlapping memories. Another suggestion is that dreaming is just a by-product of sleep and has no evolutionary function.

Another fact for all you dreamers out there – before colour TV it is estimated that only about 15% of people dreamed in colour. These days about 75% of people dream in colour, with the older generations being more likely to dream in black and white.

Tiredness generally reaches a peak around 2am and 2pm, this is why we often feel drained in the afternoons after lunch.

When you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re more likely to want to eat more. This is because there is a decrease in your leptin levels which promotes an increase in appetite. Leptin is a hormone which helps regulate appetite.

If you’re falling asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow it could mean that you’re sleep deprived (or perhaps you’re just sleeping on a ridiculously comfortable Sleep Studio mattress ….). It’s different for everyone but on average it should take roughly 10-15mins to fall asleep.

Dolphins are among a few species of the animals who sleep half of their brain at a time. The other half of their brain, along with the corresponding eye stays alert to watch for predators.

So there you have it! 9 weird and wonderful facts about sleep! If you’re looking for ways to improve your comfort in the bedroom then our local Sleep Studio experts are here to help, with a diverse range of beds, mattresses and bedroom furniture to optimise your sleeping space.

  • How to Choose the Perfect Dining Table!

How to Choose the Perfect Dining Table!

Your dining table is truly the very heart of the home, it’s a place to gather for meals, for families to connect together and an opportunity to decorate and reflect your personal style.

How to choose the right dining table

There are a few steps to consider when choosing a dining table. These include the size, style and number of chairs, materials, and placement.

    Size

Before visiting any store to look at dining tables, make sure you measure your available space and surrounds. Is your dining table going to sit in a little sunny nook by the kitchen or will it be the grand centrepiece in a formal dining area?

Your available space will make a big difference to what kind of table will work best!

    What to measure:

    • The height of your seats – it’s generally best to leave 20-30cm between the seat and the table top
    • Your dining space – it’s not just about the size of the table, remember to leave enough space for chairs and people to move around without touching walls or other furniture.

Tight on space? Consider a round dining table or bench seating to maximise your options.

    Materials

There is a huge range of dining table options out there, from rustic timber to sleek white tabletops.  Consider your other furniture and select a table to match – or work in reverse and style the rest of your space to your new table.

If your new dining table is going to be seating a busy growing family then pay attention to materials that are smooth and easy to clean.

    Shape

Round or Rectangle? The choice is yours!  Round or smaller square tables are great for tight spaces like townhouses and apartments, whilst long rectangle dining tables and large square tables are a great way to seat the entire family.

Another great benefit of buffets is they keep the entire room looking neat and tidy by providing hidden storage options for all your extra cutlery and crockery.

  • How to style a kids bedroom that grows with them!

How to style a kids bedroom that grows with them!

Kids bedrooms are so much more than just a place to sleep! For children, their bedroom is often their own little retreat, play area, study zone AND bedroom all rolled into one space!

Here we are sharing some simple tips on how you can style your little one’s room to create a space that is both stylish and functional (without breaking the bank!) Plus we’ve curated a collection of free wall art printables to get you started!

There are three key factors to keep in mind when setting up your child’s bedroom – create something that is multi-purpose, that grows with them, and keep the design fun and individual just for them!

Our Top Tips for Styling Kids Bedrooms

Storage Savers: Invest in furniture that is functional and stylish! Does your child struggle to keep their space tidy? Consider looking for a bed with hidden extra storage so you have somewhere to keep the clutter! If your child’s room is also their primary play space more storage might be necessary – this is where bookshelves, blanket boxes and wardrobes all come into play.

Floating shelves are a great way to display your child’s favourite toys or creative masterpiece whilst also clearing up valuable floor space. Swap out what’s on display as their interests change.

The Aria Lift-Up Bed provides a handy hidden storage solution

Create a neutral base: Kids obsessions come and go so quickly, so it can quickly become expensive and chaotic trying to decorate to match whatever the current trend is! Instead aim to build a timeless room and decorate with different accessories that you can easily replace. For example, instead of painting or wallpapering an entire wall, consider removable vinyl decals stickers which can be swapped out easily and cheaply when necessary.

Sleepover Solutions: Avoid the dreaded sleepover stress with hidden trundle beds! Instead of having to pull out and inflate a lumpy old blow-up mattress, be prepared for any surprise sleepover with a roll-out trundle bed.

DIY Decorations: This is a great way to keep under budget and create lasting memories with your little one!

    • Create a gallery wall of their artwork in mismatched frames
    • Make a pompom garland in their favourite colours
    • Paint a blank canvas together
    • Print out some of their family favourite photos
    • Make your own posters! Instead of paying a premium for mass-produced posters, easily print your own at your local printer or Officeworks. Pexels and Unsplash are great sources for FREE high-quality images, or use a free template in Canva to create your own one-of-a-kind artwork in minutes!
    • If you’re stuck on ideas, Pinterest is an incredible free resource of inspiration and easy to follow DIY tutorials for any skill level.

Let them grow into it: Don’t be scared to invest in full-size furniture for your kid’s room. If you’re decorating for teenagers or older kids, consider a King Single or even Double Bed frame and mattress. This will save you from having to invest in another bed as they grow. The same goes for storage solutions, investing in a full-size dresser or wardrobe will save you from re-purchasing again (and gives you extra storage! win-win!)

Our stylish Alex Bed is available in both Double and King Single to cater for all ages and sizes

Shared Bedrooms: Decorating a room for more than one child? Sharing a bedroom can be tricky – each person wants their own space and privacy. Bunk beds are the ultimate solution! They are perfect for maintaining a little privacy, giving everybody their space, and avoiding cramped, cluttered bedrooms by leaving plenty of room for activities!

Place a bunk bed in the centre of the room to evenly divide the space between siblings, or arrange it against the wall for ultimate floorspace potential. For safety reasons, make sure you choose a bunk that meets Australian Safety Standards and pair it with a specially designed bunk mattress.

  • Australian Bed & Mattress Size Guide

Australian Bed & Mattress Size Guide

Which mattress size should I choose?

The standard Australian mattress sizes are Single, King Single, Double, Queen and King. Some mattresses are also available in Long Single or Super King. Sometimes you can even buy specially designed mattresses for bunk beds! Feeling a little overwhelmed? Don’t worry, we are here to help with our complete guide to mattress sizes!

Mattress sizes are different all around the world. The standard bed sizing in Australia is different to common bed sizes in both the USA and the UK. Our closest match in bed sizes is our neighbours in New Zealand. Bed bases are generally the same size as their corresponding mattresses, but they may be slightly longer or wider, so keep this in mind when choosing your size. Keep reading for our complete guide of Australian Mattress Sizes.

    Diagram of Australian Mattress Sizes

    Single Mattress

A Single mattress measures 920 x 1870mm and is suitable for sleeping one person. They are great for tight spaces, a first ‘big kid’ bed, or on a trundle bed for guests.

A Single mattress is also a great option for smaller bedrooms or apartment living, where every centimeter of floor space counts! If you find that a Single is too small, but you don’t have room for a Queen or King, the Long Single or King Single are great alternatives, that offer a little bit of extra sleeping space.

    Long Single Mattress

A Long Single has the same width as a single mattress but is slightly longer at 920 x 2030mm. Two Long Single mattresses side-by-side are the same size as a King mattress.
Long Single mattresses are a great choice for partners who have different comfort preferences or mattress needs, individuals who require extra length in a single (but don’t have the space for a King Single) or for Adjustable Split King Beds.

By placing two Long Singles on a split base adjustable bed, you can truly create your own unique sleeping experience, completely independent of your partner whilst still remaining in close proximity.

    King Single Mattress

The King Single is the largest of all the single mattresses, measuring 1060 x 2030mm. It is wide and longer than a standard Single.

They are a popular choice for teenagers and young adults who have outgrown a standard Single mattress, or adults who want extra length and width but don’t have room for a Queen or King.

    Double Mattress

A Double mattress is a great choice for anyone who has restricted bedroom space but needs more width than a Single mattress. A standard Australian Double mattress size is 13370 x 1870mm. A Queen or King mattress will provide extra length but may not fit your space, so the Double is a great compromise.

    Queen Mattress

This is the most popular bed and mattress size in Australia, measuring 1530 x 2030mm. It has the same length as a King but is wider and longer than a Double.

Queen Mattresses are great for growing teenagers, couples, or individuals who enjoy a little more space to sleep. They are also great if you sleep solo but share your bed space with pets and want a little more room.

You’re often most likely to find Queen Mattresses on display in stores giving you plenty of opportunities to try them in person.  According to BedBuyer approximately 61% of Australians sleep on a Queen size mattress making them a versatile and popular choice.

  • How To Make Any Room Feel Instantly Bigger (Without Renovating!)

How To Make Any Room Feel Instantly Bigger (Without Renovating!)

Do you have a tiny living room? Maybe a bedroom that’s barely got room for the bed? It can sometimes seem impossible to style and enjoy these cramped spaces, but we’ve gathered a great collection of tips and tricks to make any room in your home feel bigger – without any renovations!

The clutter has got to go

Clutter can make even the biggest space feel cramped and chaotic, so in a small space it has definitely got to go! Clearing away your clutter is the first step in claiming back your space (& your sanity!)

We’ve talked about handy ways to get rid of your clutter (and keep it gone!) over in this blog post here.  Clearing away the clutter doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to any of your belongings, just get smart with storage and keep your surfaces clean and clear.

A great way to maximise space and keep it tidy in the long-term is finding clever furniture with hidden storage.

Think about your décor, often less is more so try to limit your decorative pieces to only a few favourites.

Our Oregon Lifestyle Range is sleek & slim while also providing handy storage options.
The Bermuda Coffee Table has handy storage so you can keep everything within reach.

    Mirror, Mirror on the wall..

This tip has been an interior stylist secret for a long time, adding a mirror on the wall is an instant way to brighten and enlarge any room! Take a look around next time you’re staying in a hotel room – these often have large mirrors to make a cramped space feel bigger.

Mirrors enlarge your space by reflecting light and conveying the illusion of more room.  They’re not just limited to the bedroom either – why not try a hanging mirror in your entryway or a decorative frame above a mantlepiece.

    How low can you go?

Higher ceilings make a room feel bigger so look for ways to draw the eye upwards. One of the ways you can do this is with lower furniture.
For example, consider a mid-century style, low profile sofa over a tall, high-backed lounge. Sleek low coffee tables are another easy solution.  Don’t be afraid to show a little leg either – by showing the floor beneath the furniture it makes it look as though the floor space is a lot larger than it really is.

Our Cruz Sofa has trendy low feet, and a classic silhouette.

It doesn’t all rest on your lounge either! Here are some either tips to help make your ceiling feel higher:

    • Hanging artwork and mirrors up high on the wall
    • Tall décor pieces such as lamps
    • Tall shelving and wall-mounted displays
    No more wallflowers

Most people naturally tend to push their furniture right up against the walls. It might be because we think that having it “out of the way” makes a room feel bigger, but that actually isn’t the case! Your furniture needs a little bit of breathing room, even just shifting slightly away from the wall can add the suggestion of extra space to your room.

Without blocking walkways try rearranging your existing furniture away from the walls and into the available open space. Check out how we’ve placed the lounge in the center of the room below:

Our Harper Lifestyle Range works beautifully in small spaces
    Light it up

We already mentioned lighting when we talked about mirrors, but light is a powerful tool for enhancing and enlarging any small space! Here’s a few ways you can brighten and lighten your space:

    • Let your windows shine: consider removing heavy or overpowering curtains to maximise light. Even when open bulky curtains can still block the edges of your windows – losing you valuable light!
    • Don’t let furniture stand in the way – where possible rearrange so tall furniture isn’t blocking your windows
    • Light up the shadows – use lamps and other carefully placed lights to brighten up the shadows and enlarge your space. Check out some of our favourite small space lamp tables below:
Our Newcastle Lifestyle Range lights up your living room.
    White and Bright

It’s no secret that white walls can help make your space feel bigger, but it doesn’t mean you have to paint every wall white! Any lighter colours will help create a sense of airy brightness.  If you’re in love with your moody feature wall or bold colours, never fear! You can still make your space pop – just be careful with the rest of your colour choice and avoid too much dark and heavy furniture.

We hope these tips can help you create a space that you love! Our friendly in-store staff are always happy to help provide advice when choosing new furniture. You can also follow us on Instagram and Pinterest for regular style tips and inspiration.

  • Affordable + Easy Living Room Styling Tips

Affordable + Easy Living Room Styling Tips

We know styling your space can be overwhelming, so we are sharing some of the best living room styling tips we have learnt over the years.

First things first – Choosing your lounge or sofa

You can think of styling like building your home – it’s important to start with a strong foundation to add to.  In a living room, the foundational pieces are your lounge or sofa.   It’s hard to build the lounge room you love without a lounge you love!

So what to look for in a lounge?

    • Durability

The average lounge will stay in your lounge room for more than 7 years so make sure you choose something long lasting and timeless. Also consider fabric and leather care when choosing your sofa.

    • Size
The size you choose depends on both the size of your space and your family. Smaller sofas are a great alternative for little apartments, while modular lounges are great for big families to sprawl across. You also need to make sure it will fit through your doorways and get into the lounge room!
Sofas are a great solution for smaller spaces or pair two together for a larger space! (Pictured: Chester sofa)
    • Comfort
Sure you want something that looks great, but that shouldn’t come at the cost of comfort! Spend some time deciding what kind of feel is comfortable for you.  If you like to lie down across your lounge, make sure it’s long enough or consider a design with chaise.  If you’re taller, you might prefer a sofa with a high back for extra support.

    • Style
It can be easy to jump straight into what’s currently trending, but a lounge is an investment that you want to work in with the style of your home for years to come. If in doubt, we recommend choosing a simple, timeless style and decorating with throw cushions and blankets. This way you can update your style simply by switching out the cushions. There are even lounges that come with free matching throw pillows!
The Maddox Lounge from Ashley Furniture includes free matching throw cushions
    • Functionality
Do you have friends and family who visit often? Then you might want to consider a sofa bed to save space.
There are also lounges with built-in storage, hidden ottomans, cup-holders and even USB-charging points!
Our Reva Lounge features a bonus ottoman, a pull-out sofa bed and comfortable backrests.

    Styling your new lounge

So now you’ve got your lounge or sofa sorted, what’s next?

Cushions and throw blankets are a great way to inexpensively add your own personal style. Don’t be afraid to mix different colours and shapes. A low rectangular cushion in front of a square cushion helps adds depth and height to your sofa.

    • Colour
To choose colours look at what is already in the room. Got a favourite artwork? Choose your cushions in similar colours and tones. Different colours carry different emotions, for example blue is cool and calm while orange is warm and playful.
    • Texture
Add another layer of texture with a casually draped throw blanket. The secret for getting the perfect arrangement is to pinch the blanket in the centre while holding it in the air, then pull the pinched section towards the back of the sofa.

    • Magic Numbers
It is possible to have too much of a good thing – if you have a big collection of cushions and throws, considering alternating them rather than overloading your lounge which can look cluttered.
Odd numbers work well for a relaxed and natural vibe, such as three cushions or one blanket. If you’re after a particularly formal look then you can use symmetry by placing an equal number on each side of the couch.

    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Styling doesn’t need to be symmetrical, try grouping three items together in the corner of the sofa. (Pictured: Giorgio Lounge)

    Finishing Touches

Finally don’t forget the coffee table! Tables are a great way to create a cohesive look throughout your space, whilst also being great storage options. Coffee tables come in a huge range of styles from modern industrial, to classic and traditional. Consider the rest of the space when choosing your coffee table and pair with matching side tables to complete the look.
